Overview
Logistics is truly the hidden side of business, as well
as one which needs to be even more emphasized in the curricula of academic
institutions even more than it already is. To paraphrase Frederick the Great,
without supplies, or knowing how to deliver supplies to the frontline, no
troops—or salespeople or investors or CEO—can be brave.
Analyze the logistics of the CEO or manager whom you admire the
most. Then compare his logistical tactics and strategy with that of the general
whom you admire the most. Note the commonalities between the two. See how both
employ the time-honored principles of sound logistics: foresight, flexibility,
economy, simplicity, cooperation, innovativeness. Indeed, business logistics and
military logistics are, increasingly, two sides of the same coin.
Note, too, how the victories and successes of your logistical
models can be ascribed to how well these leaders know their various customers
and constituencies and serve their needs and expectations, including their need
for and reasonable expectation of prompt and reliable delivery of goods,
services, and supplies.
As you learn more about this field, you will come to see that logistics is truly the key to victory, and only bound to
become more so. |
