Opportunity
In the world of business, logistics—or
successful supply chain management—is truly
the key to victory, and only bound to become more so.
Lest you doubt this, ask
the CEOs of Wal-Mart or Dell, whose much-lauded victories are due, as much as
anything, to the fact that they and their planners have properly recognized and
managed their respective supply chains, and have obtained the strategic
cooperation of all the members of their chains—not
an easy thing to do.
Indeed, as emerging companies look for new ways to expand
their markets, as well as reduce the cost of doing business, they will
inevitably find, to paraphrase Brutus, that the answer is not in their marketing
“stars”, but, truly, in their logistics.
During the coming century smart
logistics will increasingly become the strategic differentiator between
companies that succeed and those that fall by the wayside. Companies like
Wal-Mart, Proctor & Gamble, as well as others have created tremendous value for
their shareholders by seeing the logistical light and embracing supply chain
management as a competitive weapon. The CEOs of these and other enlightened
companies understand that business is war—and that in war logistics is key.
Want to talk about strategy? Fine. But
first, as the leaders of these and other cutting-edge companies know, you need
to be able to talk logistics.
And you can’t talk about logistics
unless and until you truly understand your firm or organization’s logistical
code.
