Overview
Business experts of various stripes have been trying to get
people to pay more attention to logistics, or distribution, as this recondite
field was designated in the 1950s and 1960s, or supply chain management, as it
is now called, for decades.
Even though transportation and
distribution costs comprise one fifth or more of sales for a typical
American company, it is not clear that many people outside of a few
traditionally logistically farsighted companies like Sears Roebuck and
Wal-Mart understand this.
Only recently, in the wake of the burst
of the dot.com bubble has the importance of successful logistics come to be
widely accepted. Like its 18th century predecessor, the south sea bubble, the
dot.com bubble can be attributed in large part to the neglect of the supply side
of business. as well as the short-sightedness of the sales-based marketing
philosophy that governed American business for most of the postwar period.
At most American companies, until as
recently as five years ago, the supply side of business was still the far side
of business. Few graduates fresh out of school would aspire to the supply
side. However, today logistics, and logisticians, have, deservedly, moved to
the center of the corporate stage. More and more, America’s business leaders
are returning to a sound early 20th-century equation, which deems that creating
demand is only the first half of the marketplace challenge and that satisfying
demand, including and especially satisfying the end customer’s natural demand
for speedy and accurate delivery, is the other requisite half.
Despite this belated coming of
consciousness, there continues to be an absence of an accessible forum for this
undeservedly neglected subject. LOC University™ is dedicated to satisfying the
need for such a forum.
